The Benefits of Using Oxygen Absorbers

Posted on December 07 2017

Anyone shopping here at FoodVacBags.com is looking to preserve their foods, or perhaps valuable non-food items. You can add the extra protection by using oxygen absorbers.

what are the benefits of using oxygen absorbers, why use oxygen absorbers

Food preservation, when done properly, has the ability to keep items fresh for months or years longer than traditional food storage methods. Using oxygen absorbers can help to extend the freshness of your foods as well as preserve your non-food items. Here are some ways to use oxygen absorbers:

In conjunction with vacuum sealer bags

When vacuum sealing foods, use oxygen absorbers to remove oxygen from the sealed vacuum bags. Oxygen absorbers help to prevent molding and the growth of aerobes, does not mix with food, and significantly extends the shelf life of your items.

In conjunction with storage containers

Oxygen absorbers can also be used with deli containers or storage containers and canisters. They will keep fresh the items that you may not want to crush by vacuum sealing. Oxygen absorbers can be exposed to oxygen in very short timeframes- so if you open your container, remove your items, and then close the container- the oxygen absorber will still retain its functionality.

To preserve non-food items

Historical documents, art, and other precious artifacts can be harmed by the presence of oxygen- leading to rapid deterioration, mildew, mold, and other contaminants. When properly used, oxygen absorbers can reduce the oxygen level in the surrounding environment to approximately 0.01%.

Hi Seth! – I think this blog post about mylar bags might help you. https://foodvacbags.com/blogs/foodsaverblogs/the-benefits-of-using-mylar-bags-how-to-use-them Towards the end, we talk about how many oxygen absorbers to use per bag size. I hope this helps.

Hey, Thanks very much for your simplified explanation of these little buggers. The one question i keep having trouble answering is: how much volume is one sachet good for? ie: for rice, were we to try and store something like 3 pound bags, vacuum packed in a chest for a few months, how many cc’s of a pacquet would we need to make sure we were making an oxygen free environment? i’m not worried about opening them and closing them, exposing to oxygen after the brief initial exposure for separation from the initial large bag, but the large bag is too big to guarantee sterile, safe, storage from internally invasive invertebrae. Once we open the smaller package, the o2 absorbers will be discarded safely, and the food will just enter regular clean storage for normal use over a reasonable period of time. (something more like a week or two compared to months sitting on a shelf (still airtight, but not vacuum packed, or needing an o2 absorber)) I appreciate anyone who has made it this far through my rant. Any more specific information would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you for commenting on the blog! The oxygen absorbers are only for use one time each. They absorb oxygen in your package and then are discarded when you open the package. They can all be used with food.

Is the oxygen absorbent pads reusable?
If they are how many times can you reuse them?
See you have 50cc, 100cc and 300cc can any of them be
    use with whatever?

    Thanks
