Can You Vacuum Seal Potatoes?

Posted on August 04 2017

Can you vacuum seal potatoes

According to The Atlantic- Health, potatoes are America’s most-consumed vegetable; we’re constantly eating them! Potatoes are an easy and popular crop to grow at home that can provide a lot of tubers to feed your family.

It’s no surprise then that many people ask us if potatoes can be vacuum sealed. The answer is yes, but potatoes are a fickle bunch when it comes to storage. Trying to vacuum seal and freeze a raw potato whole simply won’t work. So, you’ll have to prepare your potatoes for storage.

Mashed Potato Patties

One of the easiest ways to seal and store potatoes is mashed potato patties. Whip up a batch of your favorite mashed potatoes. Then, create patties on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Place the sheet in the freezer until the patties are solid. Transfer the mashed potato patties into a FoodVacBags vacuum sealer bag and seal.

French fries

Of course, French fries are the most popular use for potatoes. You can vacuum seal these, too. Cut your potatoes into fries and fry them for a short period of time, but remove them before they brown. Drain the oil, and freeze them on a cookie sheet. Once frozen, transfer the fries to your vacuum sealer bag. When you are ready to eat them, simply remove them from the bag and finish frying them.

Dehydrated Potatoes

Another great way to store potatoes is to cut them into slices or cubes (depending on what you are using them for) and dehydrate them. Once they’re dried, you can vacuum seal them. When you are ready to use them, your dehydrated potatoes can be rehydrated by adding them to soups and stews or boiling them.

Twice Baked Potatoes

If you like twice baked potatoes, why not save time at dinner by making a batch to save for later? You won’t be able to vacuum seal them in bags, but they can keep well in the freezer when stored in a vacuum seal canister. When you’re ready to eat, just pull one out to reheat and reseal the rest.

Sous Vide Potatoes

These are a super easy way to have the perfect potatoes ready to go at a moments notice on hand in the freezer. Try out this recipe for Easy Sous Vide Potatoes >

So, to sum it all up, potatoes can be vacuum sealed, but you will have to get a bit creative. On the plus side, preparing them before sealing makes preparing dinner that much faster!

Hi Larry – Unfortunately, the Preservation of whole raw potatoes through vacuum sealing is not effective. This is because they get to retain a lot of moisture which will alter the preservation. Potatoes need more preparation for long-term storage.

If vacuumed sealed and kept in a dark space how long would whole potatoes last? In the movie the Martian they lasted over two years….possible?

Hi Richard – Unfortunately, the preservation of whole raw potatoes through vacuum sealing is not effective. This is because they get to retain a lot of water which will alter the preservation. They will become mushy and will eventually go bad.

Can you vacuum seal a whole potato but not freeze it to extend self life.

  • FoodVacBags: October 02, 2020

Hi Douglas – You cannot vacuum seal and freeze potatoes as they are (whole or raw). Frozen whole potatoes tend to lose their texture and consistency. They are also difficult to completely dry after washing them. The residual moisture will reduce their lifespan in the freezer even if you vacuum seal them.

Can I vacseal potatoes whole? If so, how would i prepare them? This my first time, and need a little guidance. I read about the other ways of doing this but I don’t want to do so unless i have to.

Hi Andrea – Potatoes that are sliced will hold up best if stored in cold water and in a fridge or a cooler. They can last at least a couple days if you do it this way. Using a FoodVacBag for storing them in the cooler with the water will help keep the water that’s in with your potatoes cooler and will be easy to pack up!

    1. Going camping with no refrigeration- can we slice raw potatoes, vacuum seal them and have them Not be refrigerated for 24-48 hours before cooking them? Thanks for your response

Hi Sheila – Unfortunately, you need to partially cook your French fries before vacuum sealing and freezing them. If you skip this step, they tend to turn into mush.

Hi Laura. Unfortunately this is a difficult question to answer just yes or no. The fresher your potatoes the better the outcome. Good luck.

Jen, Yes! To bake and serve frozen potatoes directly from the freezer, unwrap the potatoes and place in a baking dish. Cover with aluminum foil and bake at 425°F for 35 to 45 minutes or until mostly warm.

A couple of days ago I cut French fries, tossed in oil and spices then vacuum sealed and they’re in the fridge, no blanching. How long will they last in the fridge? They look perfect after a couple of days.

  • FoodVacBags: June 04, 2018

Georgeann – Yes, but be sure to let them cool off first by rinsing them with some cold water to stop the cooking process.

  • FoodVacBags: June 04, 2018
