Can You Vacuum Seal Potatoes?

Posted on August 04 2017

Can you vacuum seal potatoes

According to The Atlantic- Health, potatoes are America’s most-consumed vegetable; we’re constantly eating them! Potatoes are an easy and popular crop to grow at home that can provide a lot of tubers to feed your family.

It’s no surprise then that many people ask us if potatoes can be vacuum sealed. The answer is yes, but potatoes are a fickle bunch when it comes to storage. Trying to vacuum seal and freeze a raw potato whole simply won’t work. So, you’ll have to prepare your potatoes for storage.

Mashed Potato Patties

One of the easiest ways to seal and store potatoes is mashed potato patties. Whip up a batch of your favorite mashed potatoes. Then, create patties on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Place the sheet in the freezer until the patties are solid. Transfer the mashed potato patties into a FoodVacBags vacuum sealer bag and seal.

French fries

Of course, French fries are the most popular use for potatoes. You can vacuum seal these, too. Cut your potatoes into fries and fry them for a short period of time, but remove them before they brown. Drain the oil, and freeze them on a cookie sheet. Once frozen, transfer the fries to your vacuum sealer bag. When you are ready to eat them, simply remove them from the bag and finish frying them.

Dehydrated Potatoes

Another great way to store potatoes is to cut them into slices or cubes (depending on what you are using them for) and dehydrate them. Once they’re dried, you can vacuum seal them. When you are ready to use them, your dehydrated potatoes can be rehydrated by adding them to soups and stews or boiling them.

Twice Baked Potatoes

If you like twice baked potatoes, why not save time at dinner by making a batch to save for later? You won’t be able to vacuum seal them in bags, but they can keep well in the freezer when stored in a vacuum seal canister. When you’re ready to eat, just pull one out to reheat and reseal the rest.

Sous Vide Potatoes

These are a super easy way to have the perfect potatoes ready to go at a moments notice on hand in the freezer. Try out this recipe for Easy Sous Vide Potatoes >

So, to sum it all up, potatoes can be vacuum sealed, but you will have to get a bit creative. On the plus side, preparing them before sealing makes preparing dinner that much faster!
